Distinguished and Famous people from Brisbane Central
Brisbane's central districts connect a schoolboy who became a major writer with a working woman who campaigned for political change. Schooling and public organising provide their specific local links.
๐ David Malouf
David Malouf attended Brisbane Grammar School at Spring Hill before studying at the University of Queensland. Raised on the south side of the river, he later made Brisbane an important setting in his fiction and autobiographical writing. Johnno, his first novel, appeared in 1975; The Great World won the Miles Franklin Award in 1990. For central Brisbane, the school is the precise connection: one stage in an education that preceded a much wider literary career.
๐ค Emma Miller
Emma Miller helped build Brisbane's organised labour and women's suffrage movements after arriving from England in 1879. A shirtmaker herself, she helped form a women workers' union and led the Woman's Equal Franchise Association. During the 1912 general strike she headed a contingent of women towards Parliament House. Her later campaigns opposed militarism and conscription. Central Brisbane's streets and institutions were working sites for her activism, and her statue in King George Square continues the city's public recognition of that life.
